Designing With Color Logic
Because CMYK process inks are mostly transparent, a palette of colors and effects can be created by printing one color over another. Green, for example, is made by printing cyan ink first, and then overprinting it with yellow ink. The Process Metallic Color System creates a metallic effect by printing a specially prepared silver ink under the transparent CMYK inks. The Color-Logic silver ink creates sparkle and shows through the transparent CMYK inks; the overprinted CMYK inks then create a broad range of metallic colors and effects.
Design Tip
With images, it is generally best to use metallics in the background, rendering the subject or product as process. The metallic background makes the product stand out from the page.
Rendering the product as metallic may make it appear dark and dull.
